the hungarian parliament was discussing a handful of amendments to the law of higher education last night. one of the amendments (44. §), as a result of nineteen months of work, was adding calvary chapel bible college europe to the list of accredited colleges in hungary. once the president of hungary signs these amendments (in a few weeks), it is going to be official - calvary chapel bible college europe will have an accredited bachelor of arts in theology degree.

being at the parliament was both exciting and boring. i think what the parliament needs are sound effects - once a law was voted on, they should have a jingle, or a random sound effect, something to spice things up.

a lawyer / politician friend once shared a quote with me about laws and lawmaking. some attribute the saying to otto von bismarck, others to john godfrey saxe and it says: the less the people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they sleep in the night. i agree, wholeheartedly.

I thought that CCBCE (and CCBC) did NOT want to be accredited, as they would then be accountable to the government and governing agencies. The CCBC website is pretty proud of it: "We are not accredited, nor are we seeking accreditation, so as to be free from outside control and remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit." So is CCBCE no longer connected to CCBC, then?

CCBC and CCBCE are connected, but believe it or not, Hungarian (European Union) higher educational law gives complete freedom to religious institutions in their curricula and such, the only restriction is that it has to be six semesters long for it to be called a bachelor of arts degree.

Yes, the accreditation process took nineteen months, lots of paperwork and other legal stuff (my favorite) but it was basically just a detailed description of the already existing education here at CCBCE, no changes were necessary other than adding one more semester of classes and a sixth semester for a thesis.

Is it possible to "upgrade" former Hungarian degrees to the accredited one? However, I somehow agree with Tara. During my studies it was taught with a lot of fun that Jesus and the twelve had no degree at all but conquered all the Roman Empire within their lifespan. So, it's a little bit contradiction, but, from the view of grace, who has no error?

And also IMHO there will / might be a newer temptation to students. To be performance-driven, instead of focusing only to JESUS. But it is a question of attitude. But please be prepared about the "wineskin" effect learning from History and all the great awakenings. The weak Philadelphia somehow always evolved into the we-are-going-well-by-ourselves Laodicea. So, careful, the students can easily sink into the concentration of doing homeworks and exams, instead of seeking JESUS (faith-experience instead of knowledge-experience). But I hope after some years it will show I was wrong.

And to close my comments, I am still thankful what I could learn in CCBCE. GBU to all the teachers and pastors there!
